On May 22nd, 1995, Triple H made his then-WWF debut on Monday Night Raw under the ring name Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

At first, his climb up the company ladder was gradual. However, when he teamed up with Shawn Michaels, Rick Rude, and Chyna to form the legendary faction D-Generation X, his popularity soared to new heights.
At this point, in 1997, his name, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, would be shortened to Triple H when Shawn Michaels began referencing him with a shortened version of his name. The rest, as they say, was history.
Eventually, he would achieve remarkable success as a solo performer, securing the WWF/WWE Championship nine times and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on five occasions.

On the other hand, Stephanie McMahon started in the sport of professional wrestling as Vince McMahon’s “princess daughter” on WWE television, with her first appearance being in 1999 in an on-screen storyline involving her father and The Undertaker.

In 1999, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H were entwined in a storyline. While Triple H and Chyna portrayed love interests on television, Triple H revealed that he had proposed to Stephanie in Las Vegas, and while she was intoxicated, he married her.
In the ongoing storyline, despite their unconventional start, Stephanie and Triple H began to grow closer.
Vince McMahon, however, disapproved of romantic involvement between colleagues, especially with his daughter.

A shocking betrayal for her father occurred on-air when Stephanie McMahon collaborated with Triple H to defy his authority by creating the “McMahon-Helmsley” group.
Initially, the mega-heel Stephanie McMahon tried to fake a pregnancy to remain with Hunter, but after he left her at the alter during their “renewal ceremony,” she turned on him and aligned with Triple H’s upcoming opponent at WrestleMania 18, Chris Jericho.

Meanwhile, a lot happened between Triple H and Stephanie McMahon behind the cameras as well.
In the year 2000, the couple publicly announced their previously clandestine relationship. Their most significant obstacle was Stephanie’s powerful billionaire father, Triple H’s boss.
Consequently, the early stages of their relationship were fraught with challenges. However, as Vince McMahon gradually expressed his support, the situation improved.
Stephanie McMahon provided insights into the dynamics in an interview with HuffPost Live. She explained, “My father knew my husband long before I ever did. He always says that he loved him first.”
She continued, “There was this wonderful respect and admiration between the two of them before I even came into the picture.”

Reflecting on this trying situation, Stephanie remarked, “It was not always just all roses. We were given permission, and then it was taken away. In terms of the reasons why, I don’t know if he was getting pressure.”
She continued, “It was a really big thing in our business for the top star to be dating the boss’s daughter and all of the implications it could have.”

Eventually, Vince McMahon came around again, and Triple H would propose to Stephanie on Valentine’s Day in 2003.
The duo officially tied the knot on October 25th, 2003, in a privately held ceremony at the St. Teresa of Avila Church in Sleepy Hollow, New York.
However, it was not until 2009 when WWE recognized this real-life marriage on-screen, with them fully bringing this layer into the Triple H versus Randy Orton rivalry leading into WrestleMania 29.
Although the pair eventually came out as the power couple of the professional wrestling world, the initial years after they made their relationship public were full of controversy.

One of the biggest obstacles Triple H and Stephanie McMahon faced came from former WWE Women’s Champion Chyna.
Before dating the boss’s daughter, Triple H was involved in a romantic affair with his coworker, the “Ninth Wonder of the World,” Chyna.
They dated for four years, from 1996 to 2000. However, the female member of D-Generation X did not take this new relationship with her ex-boyfriend kindly.
On many occasions, Chyna accused Stephanie McMahon of being the reason behind her breakup with Triple H. She believed that the 14-time world champion was cheating on her with McMahon.
In an interview with Vince Russo in 2015, Chyna bitterly stated, “We were planning to get married. We had a huge house in New Hampshire. I thought his career was moving up, and he was having a lot of meetings with Vince and working on the storyline. I was so proud of him for finally getting to that spot that he wanted so badly.”
She then stated, “I think Hunter’s plan was to get me to leave the relationship first. That way, he could start dating Stephanie. We got into a heated argument. We were not getting along. I told him, ‘I know something’s going on; don’t tell me something’s not going on.'”
On the other hand, Triple H has always refuted these allegations.
In an interview with Howard Stern, he claimed that his relationship with Chyna was already over by the time he started seeing McMahon.
“There’s a misconception of the way that things ended with us. [The truth] was our relationship had gone downhill.”
Triple H further added, “There was a period of time where we were separated, and things happened in between, and then you kind of partway get back together, and it really wasn’t a full-blown relationship at that time. I don’t see things the same way she does.”

Chyna always made her issues with the Hemsley-McMahon relationship public. There have also been rumors that many top stars in the company weren’t pleased, at least initially, with this marriage, as they believed it gained Hunter a massive backstage pull.
While no new details emerged about the controversial end to the relationship between Hunter and Chyna since the early 2000s, many wrestling personalities have talked about how they believe this breakup sent Chyna into a downward spiral personally and professionally.
Speaking on his Grilling JR Podcast, Jim Ross spoke of her losing the love of her life.
“I think that [Chyna] never recovered from that to a large degree, quite frankly,” JR admitted. “Full transparency, I think that she had to start healing again after WWE, and she could just not get over the hump.”
Following her passing, Triple H has spoken kindly of his ex-partner and asked his fans to do the same.
