Today in Pro Wrestling History: On July 11th, 1987, Dr. Death Steve Williams defeated Big Bubba Rogers to win the UWF Heavyweight Championship.
Today in Pro Wrestling History (July 11): Dr. Death Becomes Last UWF Champion
However, unbeknownst to many at the time, this title change would mark the end of an era for the UWF (Universal Wrestling Federation). Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP), the powerhouse behind the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), had acquired the UWF in April of that same year.
The transition wasn’t immediate, though. UWF operations continued for several months after the purchase, allowing for storylines and feuds to play out. This included Williams’ reign as the final UWF Heavyweight Champion.
By December 1987, the UWF officially ceased operations, its roster and assets absorbed into JCP and the NWA. Many of the UWF stars, including Williams, would go on to find success in the NWA and later World Championship Wrestling (WCW).
