Today In Pro Wrestling History: On January 26, 1987, at The Sun Dome, the WWF filmed the historic Piper’s Pit segment, during which Andre the Giant turned on Hulk Hogan, challenging him for the WWF World Heavyweight title at WrestleMania III.
Jesse Ventura introduced the segment with a surprise, followed by Piper bringing out Hogan, and then Ventura introducing Andre, who was unexpectedly accompanied by Bobby Heenan.
The Friendship Rots Away
Heenan accused Hogan of using his friendship with Andre to avoid defending his title against him. As Hogan tried reasoning with Andre, the Giant completed his turn by challenging Hogan for the title and ripping off his Hulkamania T-shirt and crucifix, leaving Hogan wounded and shocked.
The segment, which would be broadcast in early February, set the stage for their iconic WrestleMania III showdown.
