Graham’s impressive 296-day reign as champion came to a controversial end when he had one foot on the bottom rope during the final pin, which the referee failed to notice.

Backlund’s victory marked the beginning of an era, as he would hold the WWWF championship for a remarkable duration.

Excluding a brief one-week title reign by Antonio Inoki, Backlund’s reign continued until 1983, when he eventually lost the title to the Iron Sheik.
