Today in Pro Wrestling History: On August 27th, 1994,ย Shane Douglas ushers in the new era of “extreme wrestling” when he defeated The Tazmaniac, Dean Malenko, and 2 Cold Scorpio in a tournament to become the NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

In an angle only he, Tod Gordon, and Paul Heyman knew about, Douglas threw down the NWA title belt and stated that he did not want to be champion of a “dead promotion”.

Douglas raised the ECW Championship belt and declared it to be a global title, renaming it the ECW ‘World Heavyweight Championship.
