Produced over three years on a modest budget of $500,000, ‘Beyond the Mat’ became a surprising box office success, earning over $2 million, thanks to a grassroots campaign by wrestling fans.
The documentary was celebrated for its raw and honest portrayal, winning Best Documentary at the Cinequest Film Festival and receiving nominations for Best Documentary and Best Director from the Director’s Guild Association.
The film was also lauded in the book ‘The 100 Best Movies You’ve Never Seen,’ which praised its almost Shakespearean depth.
