Zbyszko had been groomed by Sammartino as his protege. Initially content with the role, Zbyszko eventually grew tired of being in the shadow of the Living Legend.

He challenged Sammartino to a ‘scientific contest’, only to lose and subsequently turn on Bruno. Their bitter feud became one of the highlights of both men’s careers, and one of the biggest storylines of the WWWF in the 1970s.
