Today in Pro Wrestling History: On April 15th, 1996, Brian Pillman was severely injured in a single-car accident in Kentucky, when he fell asleep at the wheel of his open-top Hummer H1.
Pillman, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was thrown over 40 feet from the car and suffered a severely broken ankle, a dislocated jaw, and facial cuts and bruises.

Despite the injuries, Pillman signed with the WWF two months later, becoming the first man to sign a guaranteed contract with the company.
Brian Pillman passed away at the age of 36, on October 5, 1997, in Bloomington, Minnesota. He would be honored on Monday Night Raw the next evening, with a ten-bell salute.
