On September 25th, 1987, The Hands of Stone, Ron Garvin, defeated Ric Flair in a steel cage match to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

Garvin’s reign has been viewed as a transitional championship to set up his return match with Flair.

He would lose the title back to The Nature Boy in a steel cage rematch, at Starrcade 1987: Chi-Town Heatย two months later.
