The storyline was steeped in controversy, as Sgt. Slaughter had turned his back on America to sympathize with Iraq, amidst real-world military tensions between the U.S. and Iraq. This angle led to a change in the event’s venue from the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Coliseum to the LA Sports Arena.

Officially, this was due to security concerns and death threats against Slaughter. However, there were also reports that slow ticket sales and the inability to fill the larger Coliseum were the real reasons for the venue shift.
