The championship had been in contention since a December 27 title match where Lawler seemingly won the title from Bockwinkel. However, due to the controversial nature of the match’s conclusion, the title was subsequently held up.
The rematch, held in Memphis, saw Bockwinkel reclaiming the championship, adding another chapter to his legacy as one of the AWA’s most iconic figures.
