Today in Pro Wrestling History (August 8): The Strangler Passes Away
Born June 30th, 1891 in Nekoosa, Wisconsin, Lewis began wrestling exhibitions at the age of 14. He eventually gained prominence as a professional and was renamed Ed “The Strangler” Lewis (in honor of former grappler Evan ‘The Strangler’ Lewis). Known for his fierce headlock maneuver, Lewis became one of the most popular athletes of his time, alongside Babe Ruth and heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey.
He dominated the pro wrestling world until his final match in 1934 against Jim Londos at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. In retirement, Lewis trained and mentored Lou Thesz, considered one of the greatest world champions of all time.
Lewis was inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2002. He was 75 at the time of his passing.
