Eric Bischoff in WWE

The Truth Behind Why He Joined the Enemy

How were the seeds planted for the arrival of Eric Bischoff in WWE? Bischoff details the step-by-step process of how he joined the enemy.

Eric Bischoff is one of the most controversial figures the pro wrestling industry has ever seen.

His innovative approach to storytelling helped catapult World Championship Wrestling to the professional wrestling world’s apex in the late ’90s.

A man who had seemingly burned all of his bridges by the time Vince McMahon purchased WCW, Bischoff very much believed his time in pro wrestling was finished.

ERIC BISCHOFF: "Jim Ross called. Up to that point, Ross hated my guts. He blamed me for every bad thing that had ever happened to him. I could tell he wasn’t excited about talking to me.

Vince or someone must have put him up to it. ‘We don’t really know if it’ll work,’ said Jim. ‘It’s a short-term deal. Come in; we’ll try it. If it works, great. If not, hey, part friends.’

ERIC BISCHOFF: "[When I arrived backstage], Stephanie McMahon walked me in, and either by design or accident, made a wrong turn."

ERIC BISCHOFF:  Instead of walking me into the Gorilla Position, she swung me through an area backstage where 20 or 25 wrestlers were watching the show around a monitor.

ERIC BISCHOFF:  "The looks on their faces were priceless. There was shock. There was fear. There was disbelief. There was anger. There was laughter."
