Pro Wrestling Stories

A Stiff Night in El Paso On February 9th, 1998, WCW Monday Nitro commenced with a recap detailing the envy-fueled actions of Hollywood Hulk Hogan from the previous week's show.

The matchup between Goldberg and William Regal (known as Steve Regal at the time) might have been initially underestimated. However, it unexpectedly became one of the most compelling matches, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

It's always intriguing to witness how incredibly popular Goldberg was at this point in his career. The resounding "Goldberg" chants echoed through the arena moments later as the bell rang, signaling the beginning of the onslaught.

William Regal: “To go out and have a competitive six-minute match with him. He was to win in the end. We laid out this match in front of the people in charge.”

Bill Goldberg: “The office didn’t tell [Regal] to go out there and try to take advantage of me and beat up a guy who had no idea what the f*** was going on! Dude, ask Regal."

Bill Goldberg: "I have no idea. I just know he tried to kick my face in a couple of times, and I was just giving him my face.”

WILLIAM REGAL: "I don’t know what Goldberg's excuses were for the match. All I know is that he’s blamed me publicly for it." GOLDBERG: "I’d love to f***ing scrap with him right now. It’d be beautiful. I’d have loved to at the time, too, had I known what he was going to do."
