The Hidden Champion: Discovering the Inspiring Journey of Paul Jones!

Pro Wrestling Stories

It's essential to remember that Paul Jones, using his real name Paul Frederik, also had a distinguished career as a wrestler during his time.

After receiving training in his native Texas under Houston promoter Paul Boesch, Jones debuted with an apprenticeship in Big Time Wrestling—the promotion that later evolved into World Class.

In 1965, Paul Jones departed for Australia, where he assumed the persona of "Al Fredericks" and collaborated with promoter Jim Barnett for an extended period of nearly two years.

In 1969, he formed a partnership with Nelson Royal and won the Americas tag team title (the precursor to the WWA “world” tag team titles).

He returned to Florida, this time as a leading antagonist, and secured every singles championship in the promotion. This success led to his persona as "No. 1, Paul Jones."

When the world finally witnessed Paul Jones in the mid-1980s, he had undergone a significant transformation and was a mere shadow of his former self.

A funny story from around this time: As the leader of the "Paul Jones Army," he trimmed his mustache a little narrower each week. When the booker caught on, Jones was asked to stop as he was beginning to look a bit too much like a German dictator from the past!
