After receiving training in his native Texas under Houston promoter Paul Boesch, Jones debuted with an apprenticeship in Big Time Wrestling—the promotion that later evolved into World Class.
In 1965, Paul Jones departed for Australia, where he assumed the persona of "Al Fredericks" and collaborated with promoter Jim Barnett for an extended period of nearly two years.
He returned to Florida, this time as a leading antagonist, and secured every singles championship in the promotion. This success led to his persona as "No. 1, Paul Jones."
A funny story from around this time:As the leader of the "Paul Jones Army," he trimmed his mustache a little narrower each week. When the booker caught on, Jones was asked to stop as he was beginning to look a bit too much like a German dictator from the past!
